What are Word Problems?
A word problem is a few sentences describing a 'real-life' scenario where a problem needs to be solved by way of a mathematical calculation.
Word problems are seen as a crucial part of learning in the primary curriculum, because they require children to apply their knowledge of various different concepts to 'real-life' scenarios.
Word problems also help children to familiarise themselves with mathematical language (vocabulary like fewer, altogether, difference, more, share, multiply, subtract, equal, reduced, etc.).

After Christmas, the students in room 1 were given boxes of gingerbread house kits. The students were asked to work in pairs to build a house using the materials provided. The teacher bought 9 kits for 21 students and 3 of the students were either absent or unable to participate in the building lesson. The houses have now been sitting on the back table for over two weeks and the students are very anxious to take them home and/or eat them… How might the students divide up the gingerbread houses in a manner that is fair to everyone in the group and/or class? Remember the houses are essentially cubes with a slanted roof, and sit on a base that is twice as wide as the house. Please show all of your work and remember to use mathematical language in your written answers.
