The Underground Railroad
Before the American Civil War (1840 - 1860), African slaves followed the North Star on the Underground Railroad to find freedom in the northern states and in Canada. The Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad but rather was a secret network of routes and safe houses that helped people escape slavery to reach freedom.
