The Land Between The Rivers
Mesopotamia which comes from the Greek word meaning 'between two rivers’ was an ancient region and is often referred to as the first civilization. It was located in the eastern Mediterranean bounded in the northeast by the Zagros Mountains and in the southeast by the Arabian Plateau. Today this area includes Iraq and parts of modern-day Iran, Syria and Turkey. Mesopotamia’s two rivers for which it is named area the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers.
